It's him. It's got to be, otherwise she could just say "it's not your friend, sorry".

The issue isn't that we don't know, it's that we need them to SAY it. With our current level of information on the subject, we have reached the point at which the probability of a miscalculation is so tiny that it's perfectly safe to begin planning assuming that we are right. However, to get them to say it somehow is the last boost we need to have everything in place, rename the forum section, and sit down to start figuring out how to deal with Todd.

So basically, it's about pushing the plot now, right? Getting things in just the right place?

Legally I think they HAVE to say 'they don't know' with regards to being asked anything about soembody who may be a patient, saying 'no he/she isn't here' isn't an option. I'm not sure why. Probably to avoid some kind of legal ramification.

I don't think it's a reveal so much as a "they've guessed it, may as well tell them they're right".

That's what I've been feeling. Though having no knowledge of his story, I have had no way of supporting that claim.

Prior to killing... Sascha Baron Cohen, the only thing he was ever focused on was killing Turpin. And, past saying 'Come on,' I've yet to see any indication that he's past this part of the story.

If we get that Notebook we might know exactly what we're dealing with here. That should be our priority right now I think.

Given the fact that he apparently refers to himself as Benjamin Barker, I doubt he's that far yet. Upon reaching London, he was insistent that That Man Is Dead.

He was in prison for a goodly amount of time. Shit happens.

Going by that explanation, while he may not yet be a murderer, he will be incredibly dangerous.

I don't know the history, but by the TVTropes page, I think it's because he killed people and a woman made pies with them.

As for the theory that he's from a point in the story before he returns to London, that's demonstrably false. He doesn't know his wife was raped until after he speaks to Mrs. Lovett. If he hadn't gone home yet, he wouldn't know what had happened to Lucy. However, it's entirely possible he hasn't started the killing spree yet. He seems to be acting the way he does in the story when he cracks and decides to kill everyone, so maybe he's on the verge and we could pull him back.

Your forgetting the confessions of violent crimes. He's either already a murderer or at the very least he's already cracked.

But that still doesn't explain why he's referring to himself as Barker.

I wasn't forgetting the confession so much as sidestepping it. I'll admit it's possible he's already gone through much of his story, including the killings. But I've long believed that Sweeney may have had to commit murder just to get out of Australia. There may be violent crime in his past that he's trying to live down, before he turns into a psychotic killing machine. But I'd definitely accept that we may have an active psychotic killing machine version of Sweeney walking around Boston as we speak.
