It wouldn't have looked very realistic had they opened a detective agency and not had any way of gathering new customers, now would it?

I believe they were, in one draft, supposed to have a more active role in things, but that didn't really pull through.

Didn't they reveal the detectives' email addresses? I know for a fact those did get used at least once or twice, cause I can still send emails as Sherlock Holmes. Which is really cool.

Speaking of which, the e-mail on Holme's website was broken. I remember trying to send him an e-mail very early into the game, almost as soon as the websites were revealed, but the e-mails kept coming back with an error message. Then we noticed a typo in the e-mail address that was linked from the website, there was a missing 's'. Once we put the 's' in, the e-mail worked fine. There was some speculation that this was an intentional test by Holmes to make sure that only intelligent people can send e-mails. There was other speculation that this was just a typo on your part. Which is it?

Man, I thought it was cool when I got an email from Sherlock Holmes. I can only imagine how cool it must be to send them.
...Though I did a double-take a few days later, when gmail listed Holmes' email under the addresses I'd recently contacted... connected to the name "Tom Pike" instead of "Sherlock Holmes".

I'm guessing on the back end it was a typo, but since everything has to make sense in story, sure, it was a puzzle Holmes set up.
