Choosing the Fictionals

What was the creative process in choosing the fictionals that would be involved in this ARG? I assume that most of them, if not all would be characters that the GMs are intimately familiar with, but why these characters in particular?

We literally went through a list of Public Domain characters and came up with the best storylines for all of them that we could. The most interesting ones stuck.

It sucks, though, because I would have loved to have more women in the ARG as far as the Public Domain characters. But what could we do with Jane Eyre? We thought about making her try to become an athlete or something (I forget) but it wasn't something any of us felt strongly enough about, so it was left by the wayside.
