Echolocation strategies

So A's been prodding us to get moving on the echoes, which made us realize we need to brainstorm strategies for GETTING the echoes.

This is what we came up with in the chatroom. Please let me know any other workable options, and I'll add them to the list.

  1. Asking relatives/ friends/ acquaintances
  2. Craigslist ad
  3. Asking random people on the internet.
  4. Contacting the establishments themselves
  5. friends of friends
  6. Faking it
  7. Making some sort of contest
  8. Contacting local forums
  9. Finding Tropers in the area and asking them

I tried to post on a Portsmouth local forum, but it seemed to tell me "ok, there's your new thread" while not actually creating anything. Maybe it was cut because I left links there. With elephants. I think this is a workable strategy, but I can't deal with it right now.

Can't believe you ninja'd me, Qara. -_-

I guess we could always ask on our personal accounts, someone somewhere MUST be able to reach these echoes...

Good idea.....

However, there are some others:

Check the places where the Mr. A faces appeared. Look at your printed out copy of the comic for reference.

Use Layar to scan the places.

In the university, pretend you're a student and sneak in. This is not recommended though, as stealing library books is illegal.

Show people the comic, saying that you're a comic artist and your friends are asking where a specific location is so you can sketch.

Ah-- the wonders of Archive Binging.

I found this directory of where tropers are, and I'm about to PM the ones in Seattle the same message I put on the forums, asking them to get the Quixote echo.

Anyone want to do the same for some of the other unfound echoes?

Edit: As a guide, here's the message I'm sending:

A favour for the tvtropes ARG wrote:Hi, so... I'm coming here from the tvtropes ARG (TheWallWillFall), and we really need a favour from a Seattle troper with a smartphone.

If you, or someone you know, could just get near the Woodland Park Zoo (601 N. 59th Street Seattle, WA) and scan it with a free smartphone app and send us the link, the metaverse will be forever in your debt. If we don't get this in time, one of our characters will die. :(

Please? I hope I can count on a fellow troper!

(details here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=210 or just ask me to explain more if you can do it)

On a side note, I've renamed the found echoes. I have no idea why I didn't do that before.
So, there are 6 more to find.

I know it's poor form, but I did some calculations about brute-forcing the echoes.
Assuming we have 10 days to retrieve them, we have to check 252708455 URLs per second. So that's out of the question. AND the newer, human-readable URLs don't fit the brutable format (but we can try cracking them by hand, if that's what the GMs want).

With Metaneko's echo having the form of '024.php', I'm trying to brute the echoes again. There are some complications, though, like the leading zeroes. So I'll have to do it all several times. :?
UPD: I'm bruting everything from 1 to 99999, with or without leading zeroes. Bash syntax is a bitch.

Well, I've now come up to ~60000, without any results.
If the GMs find that unacceptable, they are free to PM me. :D

Oh, yeah, forgot to say.
My m4d5k!11z failed to find anything. :( If the GMs do intend the echoes to be guessable, they should be more obvious. If not... carry on. :D

Okay, I'm going to try to rerail this train wreck.

I really don't think the GMs want us to bruteforce the comics. The fact that every new comic page revealed seems to have a new format seems to reinforce this. I'm not saying give up, I'm just saying that you're chances won't be good.
