Maybe they were already split up? Or Shelley ran away? She came from a Shelter, right? I forget, was the therapists friend her cats FIRST owner or did she get them from someone else too?

Well, I will say as someone who read the book about six months back that the monster certainly could have written it. He really was EXTREMELY verbose...
