One of the Cabal (likely Moriarty; we never bothered to establish specifically whom) simply hired someone to pick it up for them. It's not hard to find someone willing to go to a restaurant, pick up a notebook, and give it to you for $50 or $100.

As for how they knew to pick it up - they were looking for other fictionals for possible recruitment, after all. They were keeping track of the therapist as well.

I'm honestly fond of using the simplest solution for a problem. If we needed the Cabal to have hundreds of shadowy agents under them later, we could establish that later. But we're talking about them doing an activity that didn't require any stealth, anything illegal, or their personal involvement. It's really not hard to find someone - anyone, really - who'd do that task for them for a nominal fee.

On the other hand, I think your collective reaction showed that we were doing a great job with immersion and confusing the players, which was gratifying.
