Cheshire at least originated from a novel. Simba originated as a cartoon, so it may be different.

Hmm, I just thought of something. It could be that less realistic characters do not fully materialize in our world. They might stay in a fantasy version of our world. Not sure, but Cheshire is a fantastic creature, and the only character with an unknown location. This might happen to Simba as well if he were to fall through the crack.

And Long John chooses not to participate in the experiment. So the safe one is out, for the moment.
