Not sure what to do

Postby Krika on Fri Oct 12, 2012 11:49 am

Hey all.

I've been watching this ARG since the beginning, but I just decided to get involved right now. However, I'm honestly not sure what I can do. There are smarter and more meta-savvy people than me working on deciphering not only clues, but keeping track of what people are doing and what the implications of that are, as well as trying to communicate with them, so I don't think I can contribute anything meaningful on the front. If anything, I'd like to do field agent stuff, but that is both contingent on my ability to reach the places where clues are left, and upon clues being left.

I'm practical. I don't really care about why stuff happens, I just need to know what is happening, and what I need to do to achieving a goal. So just gathering of information, and otherwise discussions aren't really going to be my forte, but that's kinda most of what is going on.

So, is there anything really that I can do?

You can do a lot!

First of all, I hope you never feel intimidated out of discussing implications and characters. We have a lot of smart people here, but I'm beginning to suspect we are suffering from a little bit of Group Think, with people agreeing on some crazy things without considering alternatives (like the theory this is an ARG.) This situation is really weird, and it seems to me there is really NO right answer, so more thoughts on how to deal with the Fictional's are always appreciated.

There are also several things that need to be done pretty much everywhere... putting up the witches campaign posters and Don-Quixote proofing. We've been thinking about giving titles for doing that too.

As for being a field agent for fictional presence, seeing how New York is heavily populated, I'd be surprised if there wasn't anything there. Though the state is pretty big, so it may involve contacting people you know instead.

In fact, just reaching out to other people could be super useful. If you are a member on any forums or other online communities, you should poke them and see who else would be interested in the cause.

Well, it's not that I don't think there'll be anything in New York the state, but rather that I'm limited to Rochester the city specifically for almost all of my time (thank you college). And this isn't even my "home" state, so I'm unlikely to be anywhere else in it for an appreciable period of time. I do have access to DC during holidays, but that's a very limited window given that I'd rather spend it with family instead of doing stuff for this (no offense meant).

Still, I can put posters up around my college, as soon as I get access to a reliable printer. Which I really should do anyway.

D8 ...Would you like a hug, Dryu, or are you of the not hugging variety?

But yes fieldwork is great, the more the better on the fieldwork front. I really don't know how they can get anymore real world invovlement out, unless they set the game up to take place during locations where they KNOW for a factthe ARG members live which could be tricky...

Well, I'm sure many of us have posted our locations in our accounts, as I have. They could probably use that as a reference sheet.

True. Frankly, I'd love for some stuff to happen around where I live, we have some rather interesting, if small-time landmarks and rather neat stories. Also, I could be more helpful that way.

Guys, since this has somewhat been soft-derailed to location of events (wait, we're at that point where we classify the kinds of derailments?)...
Did you guys realize that we got a japanese member in the forum after Gulliver and JLS started messing around in Japan?

Does not seem to me that this one member was called here by a current player, otherwise the caller would've warned us and the japanese in question wouldn't ask if this was open to international members or was USA only (which is what he did, in the Gathering More Help thread)...

So... Either the puppetmasters are publishing the ARG over there or... crazy talk incoming. Gulliver and LJS are in japan and someone noticed them and tracked the web trail to us.

It does not matter. I'm impressed.
Maybe they have something planned for Brazil? Whatever, I'm not getting my hopes up on this.

Frankly, I wonder if we shouldn't have some kind of list of different types and degrees of derailment by this point, I'm surprised we don't already...

If they HAVE planned this (yeah it sounds crazy but maybe they have) then you can colour me ten different shades of impressed.

Regarding your crazy talk: Do you mean that someone fake (not fictional) has seen Gulliver and LJS, or do you mean that a real life person has actually seen two men who seemed out-of-place and did some research. Both sound mind-boggling and very creative.

The crazy talk would be for the latter. Making up a fake player seems too much work anyway (though I do have a theory regarding that)... But hell if it isn't awesome.

In my opinion creating a fake player would not be much more work than creating a character. It's basically the same, but with an account on here...

Having two weird looking people walk around in Japan long enough for someone to notice and then somehow realizing that they are LJS and Gulliver, and then realizing that they are part of this ARG would seem like much more work and much less likely. Of course, that is what would make it so awesome :gurt:
But I'd very much like to hear your theory :D

Actually, you (Pixelmage) were the third person to point that out. I was the second. I have no idea who was the first.

Did you point it out in the subsection for LJS and Gulliver? I'd like to read about it :)
Also how do you know there is someone before you who pointed it out?

I posted it in at least 2 diferent threads, and multiple times in one. I know because I read, but nobody else seemed to do so. If I remember correctly, it was a link to the Japanese page of LJS.

I put some links up to the Japanese wikipedia pages of Long John Silver and Don Quixote. I did that because that Japanese guy was using google translate or something, and I was certain that "Long John Silver" would just look like a weird babelfish mishmash of randomness. Is that what you meant?

At that time, I had no idea about this theory, and you can trust me on that :P It just seemed like a good idea for that Japanese guy, so he knows what's goin on. But I found it slightly suspicious that he already seemed to know about the Tokyo Tower.

You know the forum has gone paranoid when the foreign newcomer is automatically treated as a puppetmaster.
Good job, carry on. :D

Also, using Blind Idiot Translation on the forums is an endless source of lawlz.
