Word man confirmed to not be important.

Preparation and Defeat both indicate action is being or has been taken, Hunger merely indicates longing? :?

Preparation's the only one that might help us stop the Cabal?

(Also, I've mentioned this before and don't want to be repetitive-- but I don't have Twitter, so if anyone who does feels like trying out my guesses, please go ahead.)

He keeps saying we're being too abstract, so I'm not so sure that's the answer. I'm Sooooo bad at riddles!

If you are good enough, even defeat becomes a means to your ultimate end. However, he might accept this.

He keeps on stressing "is that what we'd use those WORDS for". Methinks it's more about using the words in speech than using their meanings.

Join the club.

Okay maybe this relates to the Cabal

They want to stay in this world - hunger
They're run by a villain, and villains in fiction are usually defearted (which could explain their longing not to return)
Aaaand they are preparing against us, while we prepare against them.

I have no idea. I wish he'd give us another hint...

Yes but in a way that's NOT grammatical, apparantly.

We must prepare to defeat the enemy. Hunger's the odd one out.

Nope! Though what an interesting line of thought...

Well, for what it's worth, I managed to impress him... somewhat... :|

We've been discussing the Cabal in terms of preparation and defeat, but not in terms of hunger. (There-- using the words!)
Problem is, people have already suggested very similar things... Still, he claims it's "quite simple".

DefEAT and hunger both refer to food.

Prepare is the odd one out.

We've already tried everything we can think of that's simple...

Hunger - you rpepare a meal to stave off hunger
Defeat - You prepare to defeat somebody, or fail to prepare to be defeated.
Hunger can also indicate wanting soemthing, how badly you wanted...

But the cat says it's not that abstract... :x

Only preparation. That makes it the odd one out!

(Clarification: I checked hunger and defeat as pheeble codes, and they didn't work.)

Someone please suggest this to the cat as I cannot!
