So, the Cat has tweeted a HuffPo link (and the image of the cat in the article is staring to my soul, I'm a little frightened). Probably a coincidence, but I just find it suspicious that he'd tweet about something unrelated to all this. Any thoughts, or am I reading into this too much?

We have confirmation he's ginger. It could very well be him in the shard!

You're probably right, though I haven't combed through everything yet Still, it's pretty much definite now that Metaneko is in at least one shard.

Metaneko's been known to be involved in all sorts of madness-- for one thing, trolling a certain secure chat group. (For another, possibly trolling a certain less-secure chat group.)
Just because he mentioned it does NOT mean we can trust it.
