Refictionalization: Cheshire Cat

Postby Qara-Xuan Zenith on Thu Dec 06, 2012 2:01 am

Well, A has confirmed that the echo Dil got is the only one.

The trope is confirmed to be Insurmountable Waist-High fence. *sings* I was right, I was right, I was right!

Deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 16.

I think the trope is Insurmountable Waist-High Fence.

Possibly, but that trope usually relates to video games and video game logic, I'm not sure if that can apply here as effectively.

Confirmed.
Let's get cracking. I'll ask him about the deadline. If anything, it will help us set the priorities.

All things considered, it would be awesome if this refic were done as a video game... somehow.

(heck, I'm considering writing one just so I can do it as a text adventure!)

A text adventure or lightweight ARG would be interesting to do for this.

I've at least felt like I've faced Insurmountable Waist-High Fence in real life, and of course there are are related tropes about situational constraint: Follow the Plotted Line, No Sidepaths, No Exploration, No Freedom, and Broken Bridge.

And then the more direct forms of constraint: But Thou Must, You Can't Fight Fate, Because Destiny Says So, and Railroading.

The rather chaotic and unpredictable Cheshire Cat facing a situational constraint trope makes for an interesting premise. Actually... that reminds me of another cat... whose owner might be a bird or a cow: https://twitter.com/DeadCatInABox/status/262751667269816321 "Caw, caw..."

Maybe someone here is familiar with some rapid gamedev tools, like the Game Maker, or something to build the text adventures? I sure am not.

I just found an awesome tool for that: http://gimcrackd.com/etc/src/

Dana used it for http://danaluery.com/wp-content/uploads ... ifted.html

Do we have to get permission to do the refic as a text adventure? :?

Oh, I don't know ANYTHING about actual programming. All I'd meant that I'd do was write it as the text that would be displayed if someone (i.e., the Cat) had PLAYED a text adventure... if that makes sense?

If someone could write a text adventure about Cheshie finally getting over the Insurmountable Waist-High Fence, which somehow gets him back to Wonderland, I will give them all the limes forever.

:(
I tried using RenPy a few years ago, but right now I don't have any Game Development gear installed... Just plain vanilla JAVA. Writing a full engine is beyond what I can do at the moment (and there's nowhere enough time for that) and I don't think I can learn another thing in time...

For the people getting hung up on how to actually craft a game for this refic (and I salute you all), we have this little gem:

How about RPG Maker? Or Game Maker?

RPG Maker is awful for adventure type games. It can work, but requires heavy scripting to work adequately.
Game Maker is a better option, but I don't know how to use it, and it has no preset content that I know of, so you'll have look for pictures and sounds somewhere else... I don't know anything about a dedicated repository or how that works.

I can look at Twine. Never used it, didn't know it existed. Can't say whether I can make it work or not. I think it's research time.

Update on Twine. It is EXTREMELY EASY to use.
Think wiki markup. If you can add a trope to someone, you can make a story with Twine. Simple as that. :)

On the other hand, I have no idea whatsoever for a Ches refic. Alice nut and all, I'm not confident enough that I can write the cat's personality. But if someone does want to write it in an adventure game format and does not want to do the "coding" themselves, I'm open to build it into Twine. I sent a "hello World" to the chatroom, so if anyone wants to see what it looks like, just tell me. xD

In the very least, I don't think the cat should be a main character in the game. He just wouldn't fit.
Maybe I'll try it. Don't rely on me, as I've already gone back on Quixote. :(

I'm planning to try something with this. Maybe the cat can play the game. :D

I got Twine working, it is very easy to use. It seems like a story, or even video, based on a game might make sense. I'm going down a rabbit hole thinking about it, but then again, this is about Wonderland, right?

IT PROVED A SIMPLE MATTER, WITH THE CAT'S HELP, TO TRICK HIS "OWNER" INTO READING HIS REFIC ALOUD IN THE SAME ROOM.

SOMETIMES IT IS NICE WHEN PLANS JUST WORK.
